Best Ballistic App for Mac: What Actually Runs on macOS
Almost every ballistic app is built for a phone, and the serious desktop reloading software is Windows-only — which leaves Mac shooters running a virtual machine or squinting at a phone screen. Here is what actually runs on macOS, what only pretends to, and where each one fits.
The honest starting point: “best ballistic app for Mac” is really two different questions. If you want a solver to hand you an elevation and wind number at the range, that lives on your phone and always will — that is where you are standing when you need it. If you want to sit at a desk and work out which load to shoot in the first place, that is desktop work, and that is where Mac shooters have historically been stuck.
Solvers that run on a Mac
- Hornady's web calculator — runs in Safari like any web page, free, no install. The most direct Mac-friendly answer if all you want is a drop chart. It also goes beyond the standard drag curves for bullets Hornady has radar-measured.
- Berger's web calculator — same story, free in a browser, handy if you shoot their bullets.
- Any iPhone or iPad solver — AB Quantum, Strelok Pro, GeoBallistics and the rest are iOS apps, and on an Apple Silicon Mac many iPhone apps will install and run directly from the Mac App Store if the developer allows it. Support varies by app, so check before you count on it.
What does not run on a Mac
This is where most Mac shooters hit the wall, and it is worth being blunt about it:
- QuickLOAD — Windows only.
- Gordon's Reloading Tool — Windows and Linux; Mac shooters get there through CrossOver, Parallels, a virtual machine or WINE, none of which is pleasant.
- Most reloading logbook software — overwhelmingly Windows, often quite dated.
Running Windows in a virtual machine to score a ladder is a real cost: a Windows licence, the virtual machine software, and a workflow where your chronograph plugs into one operating system and your data lives in another.

Most people want one of each, and that is the honest answer rather than a dodge. Put a free solver on your phone for the range — Hornady's is the easiest recommendation and costs nothing. Then, if you develop your own loads rather than shooting factory ammo, use a desktop tool to decide what to load, because no solver will ever tell you that. On a Mac, that second slot is the one that has been hard to fill.
