Your Garmin Xero Has the Data — Here's What to Do With It
The Garmin Xero catches every shot's velocity without a tripod or a sky screen to align — and it holds your last 50 sessions. Plug it into your computer and they all come off at once. Here's how to turn that into your best load.
Getting the data off the Xero
The fastest way is the USB cable that came with it. Plug the Xero into your computer and it mounts like a thumb drive — every session still on it is sitting in Garmin/Shot_Sessions as a .FIT file, one per string. Loadscope watches for the device: plug it in and it tells you how many sessions are on it and offers to read them. Nothing is written, moved or deleted on the chronograph.
Because a Xero holds up to 50 sessions — often several range days, and a single day can hold two different ladders plus a few unrelated strings — Loadscope asks which sessions belong to this ladder. It lists them by time, shot count, average speed and SD, grouped by range day, and pre-selects the block that is most likely your ladder. You confirm; it imports the lot in one pass.
You don't have to plug it in, though. The ShotView route works exactly as it always has: open a session in the app on your phone, share it out as a CSV, and drop that on Loadscope the same way. Both paths land in the same place and score identically — the cable is just faster when you have it. Forget the cable, or shoot with a buddy and want the data before you get home? Export from your phone and carry on.
What the numbers mean
- Per-shot velocity — the speed of each round, in order. Across a powder ladder, this is how you spot your velocity flat-spot.
- Average — the string's mean speed; what you feed a ballistic solver for your DOPE.
- SD — consistency. Single-digit SD is the target for a load you'll trust at distance.
- Extreme spread — fastest minus slowest in the string.
The gap most shooters hit
The Xero hands you clean velocity data — but it doesn't tell you which charge to pick, it doesn't connect your speeds to your groups on paper, and it doesn't predict your drop. That's the work that usually ends up in a hand-built spreadsheet, and it's where most load development stalls.
The point of a chronograph is the decision it enables: which load is best, and where will it hit at distance. Velocity is the input; the scored load and the DOPE table are the answer.
