How Loadscope Works: From Range Data to Your Best Load

Loadscope is precision-rifle load development for Mac and Windows. It reads the data you already collect at the range, scores every load you tested, and names the one that shot best — then predicts your DOPE and prints your range card. Here's the whole thing, start to finish.

From range data to a decision

When you handload, the variables stack up fast — powder charge, seating depth, primer, brass — and every combination has to be proven at the range. Loadscope picks up where your range session ends: three steps from raw data to a call.

  1. Import. Your chronograph data from a Garmin Xero or a LabRadar, and your target groups — measured right in the app from a photo, or imported from a target app like BallisticX. The workbook fills in on its own.
  2. Loadscope scores. It scores every powder charge and seating depth you tested, the same way every time.
  3. You decide. It names the load that shot best and predicts your full DOPE — so you walk away with a decision, not a spreadsheet full of numbers to squint at.

How it picks your best load

Loadscope scores every load on the four things that actually show up on target: a velocity flat-spot, standard deviation, mean radius, and vertical. It applies the same scoring to every load, every time, so the best-load call is repeatable instead of a gut read off a noisy graph. The weights are yours — chase the smallest group, or lean on vertical for distance, and it re-scores instantly. Read the full breakdown of how the scoring works →

Beyond a single test

Every load you crown a winner stays in a searchable Load Library — a whole season of workups in one place, ready to reopen, print, or build a fresh ladder from. Shot the same bullet over several powders? Compare Loads lines your saved loads up head-to-head and calls which one shot best. And a free iPhone and iPad companion, Loadscope Ballistics, carries your loads and a live DOPE dial to the firing line — measure a target group right there and send it back to the desktop over Wi-Fi.

Not a black box

The best-load call is math you can trust. Under the hood, the Loadscope workbook runs more than 1,600 individual formulas across its sheets — routing your imported data to the right load, normalizing each metric on a level scale, weighting them, and ranking the result — so every load is scored by the exact same logic. And it's a normal Excel file on your own machine: no cloud, no account, yours to open anytime.

A note on safety: This is an explainer, not load data. Handloading carries real risk — always work up from the starting charges in current published load data for your specific components, watch for pressure signs, and use only charges you can verify. Loadscope helps you read your results; it doesn't replace safe handloading practice.

See it for yourself

Import your chronograph data and measure your groups right in Loadscope, and it scores every powder charge and seating depth you tested, names your best load, predicts your full DOPE, and prints a range card — on Mac and Windows. No spreadsheets, no second app.
