How many shots per charge? A few shots per charge (many shooters run 3) finds the rough zone in a first-pass ladder; to actually trust a load you want about 10 shots at your finalist, and 20–30 before you bet a match on its numbers. The most common mistake in load development is deciding on too few shots.
There’s no single magic number — the honest answer is “it depends on what you’re asking the shots to prove.” A ladder that’s scouting for a promising charge window can get away with a few rounds each. A load you’re about to load 200 of and shoot at distance needs a lot more before its velocity spread and group numbers mean anything. Match the shot count to the size of the decision.

- Scouting a ladder (first pass): a few shots per charge across the range — enough to see where velocity settles and which charges group, not enough to crown a winner.
- Confirming a finalist: around 10 shots at the one or two charges that looked best. This is where the load earns the job.
- Trusting the numbers for distance/matches: 20–30 shots before you rely on a standard deviation figure or a group size to predict what happens at 600+.
Why a few shots finds the zone but can’t pick the winner
A first-pass ladder is a search, not a verdict. A few rounds at each charge shows you the neighborhood — where velocity flattens out, which charges obviously scatter — and that’s genuinely useful for narrowing 10 charges down to 2. What it can’t do is tell you which of those 2 finalists is actually better, because at three shots each, luck is bigger than the difference between them.
Why the number climbs as the decision gets bigger
Every number you pull off a target — group size, mean radius, velocity standard deviation — is an estimate, and estimates get more honest the more shots feed them. A three-shot group can look tiny by luck and huge by one flier; neither is the load’s true story. Standard deviation is the worst offender: off three or five shots it’s mostly noise, and it doesn’t settle down until you’ve given it real rounds. So the bigger the bet you’re placing on a load, the more shots it takes to place it honestly.
A practical shot budget
You don’t have infinite barrel life, so spend rounds where they change the decision. Run a lean first ladder to find the promising charge window, then pour the rounds into your two finalists — ten each — instead of spreading them thin across a dozen charges you’ll never load again. When one clearly wins, confirm it with a longer string before you commit. That’s more shots on fewer charges, which is exactly backwards from how most people shoot a ladder — and it’s why most ladders lie.
