.22-250 Remington Load Development: A Practical Guide

The .22-250 Remington is a flat-shooting speed demon — the cartridge that made varmint hunters fall in love with velocity. Push a light bullet past 3,800 fps and prairie dogs get very nervous, but a fast-twist .22-250 will also shoot heavy match bullets tight, so the load you develop depends entirely on the job and your barrel.

Safety first: everything below is a starting point, not load data. Always begin at the minimum charge in a current reloading manual for your exact bullet and powder, work up in small steps, and watch for pressure signs. Your rifle, brass, and components are not the ones in someone else’s data.

Why twist rate decides your .22-250 load

A standard 1:14 twist stabilizes light 40–55-grain varmint bullets at blistering speed; a fast 1:8 or 1:7 twist opens the door to heavy 75–80-grain match bullets that hold wind at distance. Those are two completely different loads in the same case, so know your twist before you pick a bullet. It burns throats fast, which is one more reason to find a good load with a clean ladder and stop chasing.
