22 Creedmoor Load Development: A Practical Guide
The 22 Creedmoor is a 6.5 Creedmoor case necked down to .224, and it does something unusual — it drives 80–95 grain high-BC .22 caliber bullets past 3,000 fps with almost no recoil. It spent years as a wildcat before being standardized, and it is now one of the fastest-growing cartridges in precision shooting.
Why shooters are moving to it
Modern heavy .22 caliber bullets changed the math. An 88 or 90 grain .224 projectile carries a G7 BC in the same neighborhood as a 140 grain 6.5mm — and the 22 Creedmoor has enough case capacity behind it to launch one at speed. The result reads like a 6mm downrange while kicking like almost nothing, which means you can watch your own impacts through the scope and correct without breaking position.
The costs are real and worth knowing up front. Barrel life is shorter than a 6.5 Creedmoor — commonly quoted around 1,200–2,000 rounds — and you need a fast twist, typically 1:6.5 or 1:7, to stabilize the heavy bullets that make the cartridge worth shooting. A standard varmint-twist .22 barrel will not do it.
What shooters reach for (starting points)
- Powder: Hodgdon H4350 is the common starting point behind the heavier bullets, with Alliant Reloder 16 and Reloder 23, Vihtavuori N555 and N560, and Hodgdon H4831SC all in regular use. Slower powders generally suit the heavy-bullet, high-capacity combination.
- Bullets: the Hornady 88 ELD-M, Berger 85.5 Long Range Hybrid Target, Sierra 90 MatchKing, and Berger 80.5 Fullbore are the mainstays. Confirm your barrel’s twist rate supports the weight you want before ordering — this is the single most common mistake made with this cartridge.
- Brass: purpose-made 22 Creedmoor brass is available from Alpha Munitions, Peterson, and Hornady. Many shooters still neck down 6mm or 6.5 Creedmoor brass, which works well but adds a forming step and a trim.
- Primers: large rifle — CCI 200, CCI BR-2, and Federal 210M. Standard ignition is sufficient with the powders above; magnum primers are not generally needed.

- Check your twist and throat first. Everything else depends on it. A 1:8 twist barrel will not reliably stabilize a 90 grain bullet, and no amount of load development fixes that.
- Pick your components and look up published minimum and maximum charges for your exact bullet and powder pair. Hodgdon and Hornady publish 22 Creedmoor data now that it is a standardized cartridge — use current data rather than old wildcat notes.
