25 Creedmoor Load Development: A Practical Guide
The 25 Creedmoor is the quarter-bore the .257 always deserved — a 6.5 Creedmoor case necked to .257 running the new generation of high-BC .25 bullets fast and flat. It splits the difference between a 6mm and a 6.5 nicely, and because it is young, developing a load is about your own data more than decades of folklore.
Why the 25 Creedmoor is worth working up
Modern high-BC .257 bullets finally give the quarter-bore the downrange performance it lacked, and the efficient Creedmoor case drives them fast with manageable recoil. It fits short actions and runs off widely available 6.5 Creedmoor brass necked down. Because the load data is newer and thinner than a legacy cartridge, a careful ladder and honest scoring matter more here — your rifle’s data is the best guide you have.
What shooters reach for (starting points)
- Powder: H4350 is the natural starting point (it suits the Creedmoor case); Reloder 16, Reloder 23 and H1000 are popular behind the heaviest bullets. Pick one with good published data for your bullet.
- Bullets: the new high-BC 131–135-grain .257 match bullets (Blackjack, Hornady 134 ELD-M, Berger 133/135) are what make the cartridge; they hold wind far better than the .25s of the past.
- Brass: commonly formed from 6.5 Creedmoor brass necked to .257; Alpha, Peterson and Hornady make dedicated 25 Creedmoor brass as it catches on.
- Primers: large rifle for most brass (CCI 200 / BR-2, Federal 210M); small-rifle-primer brass takes a small rifle primer — match the primer to your brass.
