.284 Winchester Load Development: A Practical Guide
The .284 Winchester is the quiet favorite of F-Open and long-range target shooters: an efficient 7mm that pushes very high-BC bullets at real velocity without a magnum’s recoil or barrel wear. Give it a long throat for the heavy bullets and it is one of the most rewarding cartridges to develop for distance.
Why the .284 Winchester rules F-Open
Its efficient case drives 180-grain-class 7mm match bullets, which carry some of the best ballistic coefficients available, at speeds that stay supersonic well past 1,000 yards — and it does it on a short action with manageable recoil. The trade-off is that those long bullets need throat and magazine room, so seating depth and throat length matter more here than on a stubby cartridge. That makes honest ladder and seating data especially valuable.
What shooters reach for (starting points)
- Powder: H4831SC and H4350 are classic .284 powders; RL17, RL23, Vihtavuori N160/N165, N560 and H1000 are popular behind the heaviest bullets. Match the powder to your bullet weight and barrel length.
- Bullets: the 180–184-grain 7mm match bullets (Berger 180 Hybrid and 184 F-Open Hybrid, Hornady 180 ELD-M) are the F-Open staples, with the 195 Berger EOL for shooters with the throat to run it.
- Brass: Lapua and Peterson make excellent .284 brass; many shooters also form from 6.5-284. Uniform, well-prepped brass is the foundation of a low-SD long-range load.
- Primers: large rifle — Federal 210M, CCI BR-2 and similar; some shooters step up to a magnum primer with the slowest powders and heaviest charges.
