6.5 ARC Load Development: A Practical Guide
The 6.5 ARC packs meaningful 6.5-caliber reach into an AR-15 — an efficient Hornady design that sends high-BC bullets past 1,000 yards from a standard magazine, and shoots even better in a bolt gun. Developing for it means working smart inside the AR’s length and gas limits, which makes clean data more useful, not less.
Why the 6.5 ARC is worth developing for
It is efficient and mild, so components and barrels last, and it delivers real 6.5 ballistics from a semi-auto that most 6.5s can’t use — and from a light, short-action bolt gun. The catch in an AR is the box magazine: overall length is capped, so you often can’t chase the lands the way a bolt gun can, and gas timing rewards a load that runs clean. What shooters reach for (starting points)
- Powder: CFE223, Ramshot TAC, AA2520, LEVERevolution and Vihtavuori N140 are popular 6.5 ARC powders in the AR; bolt guns often step to H4350-class medium powders with the heaviest bullets. Pick one with good published data for your bullet and platform.
- Bullets: 120–130-grain match and hunting bullets (Hornady 123 ELD-M and SST, Nosler 129) run at magazine length in an AR; a fast-twist bolt gun opens the door to the heavier 140–147-grain high-BC bullets seated long.
- Brass: Hornady, Starline, Peterson and ADG make 6.5 ARC brass; consistent brass and careful trim length keep an AR feeding and shooting.
- Primers: small rifle — CCI 400/450/BR-4 and Federal 205 are common; some shooters prefer the tougher cups of a CCI 41 for semi-auto slam-fire margin.
