6mm BR Load Development: A Practical Guide
The 6mm BR is the cartridge other cartridges are measured against. Short, fat, and efficient, it is inherently accurate, easy on barrels, and mild to shoot — which is exactly why benchrest and PRS shooters treat it as the benchmark, and why it is the parent of the 6mm Dasher and 6mm GT.
Why the 6mm BR is the accuracy benchmark
Its short, wide case burns powder efficiently and meters consistently, so velocity spreads come in low without much fuss. Recoil is negligible, barrels last, and the design is forgiving of small load changes — you spend less time hunting for the sweet spot and more time confirming it. What shooters reach for (starting points)
- Powder: Varget and H4895 are the traditional 6BR powders; Reloder 15, CFE223 and Vihtavuori N540/N135 are popular too. The small, efficient case likes medium-burn-rate powders — pick one with good published data for your bullet.
- Bullets: the 105–115-grain match bullets dominate (Berger 105 Hybrid and 108 BT, Hornady 105 BTHP, Sierra 107/110, the 115 DTAC) in fast-twist barrels; shorter throats and slower twists run 88–95-grain bullets faster.
- Brass: Lapua is the standard and dominates the discipline; consistent brass is most of why the 6BR shoots, so it is worth buying good and prepping it well.
- Primers: small rifle — CCI 450 or BR-4 and Federal 205M are the common picks; the small primer pocket is part of the case’s consistency.
