7mm-08 Remington Load Development: A Practical Guide
The 7mm-08 Remington is one of the most efficient, well-mannered cartridges you can hand-load — a .308 case necked to 7mm that gives you high-BC bullets, light recoil, and a short action. It is a favorite for hunting, youth and recoil-sensitive shooters, and it quietly shoots very well on paper too.
Why the 7mm-08 is easy to love
It runs 7mm bullets, which carry excellent ballistic coefficients, from an efficient short-action case with modest recoil and good barrel life. Data is plentiful, it is forgiving to develop for, and it does not beat you up over a long ladder. Give it a good bullet and a settled charge and it delivers flat-shooting, low-recoil performance that punches above its size.
What shooters reach for (starting points)
- Powder: Varget, H4350, Reloder 16 and IMR 4064 are popular 7mm-08 powders; match the burn rate to your bullet weight and pick one with good published data.
- Bullets: 120–140-grain bullets for a fast, flat hunting load and 150–162-grain high-BC bullets (Nosler AccuBond, Berger 168 for target) when you want to reach out; heavier bullets hold wind best.
- Brass: Lapua, Peterson, Winchester and Norma make good 7mm-08 brass; consistent brass tightens your velocity spread before you touch the load.
- Primers: standard large rifle — CCI 200 / BR-2, Federal 210M, and similar are widely used.
