7mm PRC Load Development: A Practical Guide
Hornady built the 7mm PRC around modern long, heavy 7mm bullets and a fast twist — the things the 7mm Remington Magnum was never designed for. It is a factory cartridge with match-grade intentions, and it has been adopted quickly by long-range hunters and competitors alike.
What the 7mm PRC actually fixes
The 7mm bore has always offered an excellent balance of bullet weight, ballistic coefficient, and recoil. The problem was that the standard-setting 7mm magnums were designed in an era of shorter bullets, with slow twists and long throats that leave modern high-BC projectiles either unstable or seated deep into the powder column.
The 7mm PRC was drawn the other way around: a beltless, sharp-shouldered case sized for a standard-length magnum action, with a 1:8 twist specified from the start and a throat cut for long bullets. A 180 grain ELD-M leaves a 24 inch barrel around 2,950 fps with room to seat properly. It is a straightforward cartridge to develop for, which is much of its appeal.
What shooters reach for (starting points)
- Powder: Hodgdon H1000 and Retumbo are the common starting points, with Alliant Reloder 23 and Reloder 26, Vihtavuori N565 and N568, and Accurate Magpro all in use. This is a slow-powder cartridge — fast powders will not fill the case usefully.
- Bullets: the Hornady 180 ELD-M and 175 ELD-X, Berger 180 Hybrid and 195 Extreme Outer Limits, and Sierra 183 and 190 MatchKing are the mainstays. The 1:8 twist handles all of them, which is the point of the cartridge.
- Brass: Hornady, ADG, Peterson, and Alpha Munitions all produce 7mm PRC brass. It is a beltless case that headspaces on the shoulder, so shoulder bump is measured and controlled the same way as any modern cartridge — simpler than the belted magnums it replaces.
- Primers: large rifle magnum — Federal 215M and CCI 250 are the standard picks. The powder charge and case capacity genuinely benefit from magnum ignition here.

- Pick your components and look up published minimum and maximum charges for your exact bullet and powder pair. Hornady publishes thorough 7mm PRC data, and the powder makers have followed — there is no shortage of current reference material for this one.
- Run a powder ladder. Load a spread of charges across the safe range and chronograph every one, looking for the velocity flat-spot — the charge window where speed stops responding much to more powder.
