MagnetoSpeed — barrel-mounted, budget-friendly
The MagnetoSpeed is a bayonet-style bar that clamps to your barrel or muzzle device; magnetic sensors read each bullet as it passes. It’s the least expensive way to get lab-grade velocity, it works in any light, and it never misses a shot because the bullet passes right over the sensors. The catch is that it’s attached to the barrel: the added weight changes barrel harmonics, so groups fired with it on don’t always match groups fired with it off, and you can’t read velocity and shoot your real group at the same time. Best for the shooter who wants accurate numbers cheaply and doesn’t mind developing with it on, then confirming groups with it off.
Garmin Xero — the compact radar
The Garmin Xero is a pocket-sized Doppler radar that sits on a small tripod next to you. Because it’s radar, it never touches the rifle — no point-of-impact shift — and setup is nearly instant: set it beside the bench, aim it downrange, shoot. It reads every shot with per-shot velocity, works for essentially any firearm, and it’s small enough to live in a range bag. It costs more than a MagnetoSpeed, and radar can occasionally drop a shot, but for most handloaders it’s the easiest of the three to actually use. Best for the shooter who values fast setup and never wants the chronograph affecting the group.
LabRadar — the original radar
LabRadar brought Doppler radar to the range first and earned a strong reputation for accuracy. Like the Xero, it doesn’t touch the rifle and captures a lot of data per shot. The trade-offs are size and fuss: the classic unit is bulkier, its aiming and setup are more finicky, and it’s hungrier on batteries. A newer, smaller LabRadar answers some of that. Best for the shooter who already owns one and trusts it, or who wants the deep per-shot data and doesn’t mind the extra setup.
How to choose
