The 257 Weatherby Magnum was Roy Weatherby’s own favorite — a blistering quarter-bore that shoots flatter than almost anything on four legs will ever notice. A belted magnum with a long freebore, it rewards a careful handload, and the new generation of high-BC .257 bullets has given it real reach to develop toward.
Why the 257 Weatherby rewards careful work
It drives .257 bullets at magnum speed, so a well-developed load flattens trajectory and holds energy far downrange — and modern high-BC .257 bullets finally let it hold wind at distance the way it never used to. Two things make it its own animal: a long factory freebore that changes how you think about seating and jump, and a healthy appetite for barrel, which is one more reason to find a good load with a clean ladder and stop chasing.
What shooters reach for (starting points)
- Powder: Reloder 22, Reloder 25, Reloder 26, H1000, Retumbo and Vihtavuori N165/N170 are popular 257 Weatherby powders; the big case wants slow-burning magnum powders — match them to your bullet weight.
- Bullets: 100–120-grain hunting bullets (Barnes TTSX, Nosler AccuBond and Partition) for game at speed, and the new high-BC 131–135-grain .257 match bullets (Blackjack, Hornady 134 ELD-M) when you want to reach — if your twist will stabilize them.
