280 Ackley Improved Load Development: A Practical Guide
The 280 Ackley Improved takes an already-excellent 7mm hunting round, blows the shoulder out to 40 degrees, and reaches near 7mm Remington Magnum velocity on less powder — with no belt and less recoil. SAAMI-standardized and beloved by long-range hunters and F-Class shooters, it is one of the most rewarding cartridges to develop a load for.
Why the 280 AI is a long-range favorite
The improved case runs high-BC 7mm bullets fast and efficiently, so a well-developed load holds velocity and energy far downrange without a magnum’s wear or recoil. Most shooters fire-form from .280 Remington brass, which means your brass and chamber are uniquely yours — one more reason your own ladder and seating data beat a stranger’s. Give it a fast enough twist for the heavy bullets and it reaches a long way.
What shooters reach for (starting points)
- Powder: H4831SC, IMR 7828, Reloder 22, Reloder 23, Reloder 26 and H1000 are popular 280 AI powders; the case likes slow-burning rifle powders — match them to your bullet weight and pick one with good published data.
- Bullets: 150–168-grain hunting bullets (Nosler AccuBond and Partition, Hornady ELD-X) for game, and 180–184-grain high-BC match bullets (Berger 180/184 Hybrid, Hornady 180 ELD-M) for target work — if your twist will stabilize them.
- Brass: Peterson, Nosler and ADG make dedicated 280 AI brass; many shooters fire-form from .280 Remington. Uniform, well-prepped brass is the foundation of a low-SD load.
- Primers: large rifle — Federal 210M, CCI BR-2 and similar; some shooters step up to a magnum primer with the slowest powders and heaviest charges.
