.338 Lapua Magnum Load Development: A Practical Guide

The .338 Lapua Magnum is a serious extreme-long-range cartridge — it drives heavy, high-BC .338 bullets fast enough to stay supersonic well past 1,500 yards. It is expensive to feed and it recoils hard, which is exactly why you want a settled, well-developed load rather than burning barrel and brass chasing one.

Safety first: everything below is a starting point, not load data. Always begin at the minimum charge in a current reloading manual for your exact bullet and powder, work up in small steps, and watch for pressure signs. Your rifle, brass, and components are not the ones in someone else’s data.

Why the .338 Lapua is worth developing carefully

Its case capacity pushes 250–300-grain bullets with some of the best ballistic coefficients made, so a good load holds velocity and bucks wind at distances most cartridges cannot reach. But components are costly and recoil punishes sloppy shooting, so every round of your ladder counts. Careful charge and seating work here pays off in both performance and the barrel and brass you save.
