.338 Lapua Magnum Load Development: A Practical Guide
The .338 Lapua Magnum is a serious extreme-long-range cartridge — it drives heavy, high-BC .338 bullets fast enough to stay supersonic well past 1,500 yards. It is expensive to feed and it recoils hard, which is exactly why you want a settled, well-developed load rather than burning barrel and brass chasing one.
Why the .338 Lapua is worth developing carefully
Its case capacity pushes 250–300-grain bullets with some of the best ballistic coefficients made, so a good load holds velocity and bucks wind at distances most cartridges cannot reach. But components are costly and recoil punishes sloppy shooting, so every round of your ladder counts. Careful charge and seating work here pays off in both performance and the barrel and brass you save.
What shooters reach for (starting points)
- Powder: Retumbo, H1000, US869, Vihtavuori N570 and Reloder 33 are popular .338 Lapua powders; the big case wants slow-burning magnum powders — match them to your bullet weight.
- Bullets: the 250–300-grain high-BC match bullets (Berger 300 OTM, Hornady 285 ELD-M, Sierra 300 MatchKing) are the extreme-range staples; the heaviest hold velocity best at distance.
- Brass: Lapua and Peterson make excellent .338 Lapua brass; given the cost per round, uniform well-prepped brass is worth every minute.
- Primers: large rifle magnum — Federal 215M, CCI 250 and similar are used to light the big charges consistently.
